Q. What is the difference between the Cisco 7940G IP phone and the Cisco 7940 IP phone? A. The "G" in 7940 G stands for Global, the 7940 G uses icons on the four soft keys instead of English text. This allows non-English speaking users to recognize their function more easily. Cisco has discontinued the production of the 7940 and only manufactures the 7940G now. Q. What is the difference between the Cisco 7940G and the 7960G? A. The 7940 G has two programmable line and feature buttons whereas the 7960G has six. Q. What is the difference between the Cisco CP-7940G and the 7940G? A. Nothing they are the same phone. The former is the actual Cisco model number and the latter is a common abbreviated form. Q. Is a power adapter necessary to use the phone? A. Not if the phone is used with Power over Ethernet (PoE) otherwise yes it is necessary.
